"Ellen and Monty"

After working in theatre administration and marketing in the Bay Area, a health issue moved Ellen to the north coast in 1988, where she began offering writing and design services as a consultant. She started working with the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce in 1992, first under contract, then as a volunteer.

That’s the same year that she and Beth Wayne devised Victorian Village Mysteries, writing and staging original mystery weekends for guests in Ferndale, a collaboration which continued for 12 years. In 1997 Ellen studied HTML to create user friendly web pages for Victorian Village Mysteries and the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce.

Along the way she attended a watercolor demonstration by Virginia Sutherland at the Old Town Art Gallery. A classically trained artist and retired teacher, Virginia’s skill and the way she approached teaching art impressed Ellen. She began painting with Virginia somewhere around 2001.

Watercolors look deceptively simple, but painting from light to dark bends the painter’s brain, forcing it to think backwards. Technically, the difference between success and frustration is recognition of essential areas of light that must be set aside from the outset. Then transparent layers are built up to create areas of colors that reveal their depths and potential only in their interplay with one another. Done correctly, they achieve a distinctive freshness.

Ellen began entering paintings in the Humboldt County Fair from the beginning, garnering a few ribbons and prizes. She participated in several group shows with other artists from Virginia’s classes: in 2005 and 2006 at the Trinidad Art Gallery, 2005 and 2006 at Ellis Engineering. Virginia asked Ellen to participate in the August 2006 Old Town Art Gallery invitational show. Her paintings also were on display in Ferndale’s Wild Blackberry Café March 2006 through January 2008.

Ellen began participating in North Coast Open Studios in 2006. Following the 2006 Open Studios tour, Ferndale’s Little Shop on the Corner began to carry her art notecards. Summer of 2007 brought another Open Studios tour and an invitation to exhibit that summer at Little Shop in the Middle of the Block, along with Camille Regli and Joan Katri. That led to solo exhibits, October/November 2007 at Redwood Memorial Hospital, March/April 2008 in the tasting room at Riverbend Cellars and The Groves Restaurant, Myers Flats, and May 2008 at Antiques & Goodies in Eureka. She showed at Ferndale in Little Shop on the Corner with Camille Regli, Joan Katri and Willa Briggs in January/February and July through October of 2008.

Ellen is featured artist at Redwood Curtain July and August of 2010, and scheduled to show at Plaza Design in McKinleyville in November, 2010.

When not painting, Ellen designs and constructs websites, and continues to offer writing and design services through BriggsArts.com.
